Why to Focus on the Breath

November 11, 2010 Pilates by Rachel Meier

Why so much Focus on the Breath?
Relax - Breathing properly encourages oxygenation of the blood, helps to relax the muscles and avoid unnecessary tension.  Many of us already carry a lot of tension in our neck and shoulders so why create more?

Focus - A relaxed and full breath pattern helps to focus the mind and allows concentration on each exercise.  Exhaling deeply helps to activate the deeper abdominal muscles.

Stabilize – Engagement of the lower abdominal muscles provides more stabilization through the pelvis and spine, particularly the lumbar spine or lower back area. Remember to be aware to ‘start’ to exhale BEFORE the actual movement for more stabilization.

The Pilates Breath

November 05, 2010 Pilates by Rachel Meier

The Pilates Breath:

1.     Inhale through the nose as you think of your spine getting longer.  Contract your abdominal muscles, pulling IN towards your spine.  Think of your navel going ‘IN, UP and WIDE’, allowing the air to fill up the SIDE and BACK of your Ribs.  Remember, No belly breathing, your abs should pull in, toward your spine.

2.     Exhale through your mouth, (like a yawn), as you deepen the contraction of your abdominal muscles further in toward the spine.  As your muscles contract, your front ribs and hip bones (‘the 4 points’) will get closer to each other.  Be aware to NOT tuck the pelvis, keep the pelvic bones stable in a neutral position. This is your IMPRINT.

3.     Continue with this breathing pattern and keep the abdominal muscles contracted.  Don’t release the muscles, and on each exhale, deepen the connection.

4.     Lastly, be mindful as you breathe to allow the air to ‘Flow’ in and out as you feel freedom of movement in your body.  Think of lengthening the spine with each breath.

Using ‘Mental Imagery’ is very powerful and will help you in your Pilates training.

Leslie's first BLOG!!

October 28, 2010 Pilates by Leslie Clayton

Okay, Everybody's doin it. I guess it's my turn! I'm bloggin it.

So... What is a Blog anyway? Does anybody know the birds and the bees about why a Blog is called a Blog? In the last paragraph of this "first blog" of mine, I'm asking everyone to make a comment or ask a question of some kind. Maybe someone will tell me the birds and bees about blogs.
The creativity that moves through the human mind and heart is amazing. I am in awe of how enormous, multi layered and complex the world wide web is. Look at how many ways these resources are being utilized for information and creativity!

My first blog is kind of like my coming out party!

Body Awareness Studio is just completing 17 years in business. Slow and steady, quiet and strong. During this time, I've been gathering my Pilates and body work skills as well as building the business with baby steps. The Body Awareness instructors and the office team have been working hard behind the scenes to update our classes and our scheduling systems so that we can serve you better and offer you more. We are giving our selves and the studio a "Make Over".

Here's what's up......

At the beginning of 2010, I made the decision to explore the possibility of expanding my little studio into a second location or moving to a larger space. I felt inspired to do this because business was booming, teachers were wanting to create more, and we wanted to be able to reach more people. I am known for being cautious and careful in most situations.  So, we are taking our time as we move towards the expansion. It's always been important to me that we create a "Win, Win, Win" in all studio matters. In order to do that, I've had to be aware of what each part of the whole is needing next. I can assure you, I don't know what everyone needs, but I do keep my eyes and hears open and hope to see and hear what people are enjoying and what is bringing the most value to our customers and teachers. As a result, we are launching some new types of Group Reformer classes.  GET READY! The renaming will happen on November 1st! The instructors have been having a great time sharing their ideas. We are fine tuning our old Pilates exercises and creating some new ones that will challenge you and make you smile.

My business is an extension of my sacred work in the world, which simply means, I pay close attention to the ways that life is showing up for me through the consciousness of my body and the nature of my relationships with my clients, teachers and office team. I have a simply body awareness practice of slowing down and listening to my body for guidance. At this moment in time, my bodies wisdom and a few financial experts are confirming that the studio expansion needs to be a small step. So be it. We are still working on the details of the expansion. In the mean time, we are focusing on filling up are new Group Reformer classes with Pilates enthusiasts of all levels, shapes and sizes!
So...what makes a blog a good blog to you? Does it have to be spiced up with scandal and shock your chakras? Do you want the facts and only the facts about ab strength? Would you like to hear from various Pilates experts and multiple sources of well-being? Want to know what's going on behind the scenes with me and the studio? Let us know what you think.
